A free expo will teach grandparents and other caregivers raising children how to better navigate health care options and advocate for the health of the entire family. 

The Third Annual Grandparent Caregiver Service Expo, sponsored by the Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS) and Texas AgriLife Extension, is set for Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Depelchin Children’s Center, 4950 Memorial Drive.

The expo will provide grandparents and caregivers with information and updates to the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Medicaid, Medicare and other health care programs. Various agencies will offer on-site assistance to help those seeking health coverage and other services for themselves and their grandchildren. 

The event will feature resources and sessions that help caregivers advocate for their health and their family members when seeking services.

The expo will also help caregivers become more tech savvy so they can keep abreast of their children’s interests. Caregivers will learn about emailing, texting, social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter and updates on laws and technology.

Healthy food demonstrations and a nutrition session addressing healthy eating for older adults and children and recent changes to the nutritional guidelines are also scheduled.

US Census data for 2010 indicate that there are approximately 56,500 grandparent-headed households in Houston and more than 653,500 in Texas.
