Free fair to help seniors learn to prevent accidental falls

September 18, 2012

Area seniors can learn how to prevent accidental falls during a free fair from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 27 at the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center, 1475 West Gray.

Activities will include exercise and balance classes, strength and flexibility exercises and performances by senior groups. Information sessions will focus on lifestyle changes and avoiding and reducing falls.

The event represents the local observance of National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every 15 seconds an older adult is treated in an emergency room for a fall and that every 29 minutes an older adult dies following a fall.

Event sponsors are the Houston Department of Health and Human Services, Harris County Area Agency on Aging and Houston Council Member Stephen Costello.

No registration is required to attend the fair. For more information, call 832-393-4494.
