The Houston Department of Health and Human Services will honor 53 medical providers for outstanding immunization coverage rates in 2004 among children at the third annual VFC/AFIX Provider Recognition Ceremony from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27 at the University of Houston - Hilton (Conrad Hilton Grand Ballroom). The keynote speaker will be Andrew Kroger, MD, with the National Immunization Program - Centers for Disease Control. The recognition is in observance of National Immunization Week.

It is recommended that children receive 80 percent of their lifetime vaccinations by age two, ensuring protection against potentially deadly diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio, measles, mumps, rubella, H. influenza type b, varicella (chicken pox) and hepatitis b.
