HDHHS recommends evacuee immunizations at clinics

September 9, 2005

The Houston Department of Health and Human Services reminds Hurricane Katrina evacuees to visit city, county, hospital district and community clinics for tetanus and hepatitis A immunizations. Emergency rooms are not appropriate locations for immunizations.

Tetanus and hepatitis A vaccines are available at the shelters set up at the Reliant complex and the George R. Brown convention center. Mobile clinics at the various shelters throughout the city are also providing the immunizations.

Health officials recommend shelter residents obtain both vaccines. Those living outside shelters only need to stay up to date with their tetanus immunization.
Hepatitis A vaccine is not recommended for people responding to the hurricane Katrina disaster as the risk for the disease is extremely low. No immunizations are recommended for volunteers.
