Latino HIV task force schedules Meet & Greet open house

March 6, 2008

The Latino HIV Task Force will sponsor a “Meet & Greet” open house from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 26 at the United Way, 50 Waugh Drive.

The event is open to those interested in increasing education and awareness of HIV, AIDS and sexually-transmitted diseases among Hispanics in the Houston area.

Hispanics in Houston and Harris County represent 21 percent of the 14,955 HIV infections reported to the Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS) since 1999. They also make up 17 percent of the 24,774 local AIDS cases reported to HDHHS since the start of the epidemic in 1981.

Convened by HDHHS in 2002, the task force is comprised of health agencies and community-based organizations providing HIV and AIDS prevention programs or medical treatment.
