Symposium part of national women and girls HIV awareness day

February 23, 2009

The Latino HIV Task Force and Katine & Nechman, L.L.P. will present “The Face of HIV” and “Immigration Issues Affecting Latino Women and Girls with HIV” during a symposium on March 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1111 North Loop West, Suite 180.

The task force and Katine & Nechman are sponsoring the event as part of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Hispanic women and girls represent 14 percent of the 4,563 new female HIV cases reported to the Houston Department of Health and Human Services (HDHHS) since 1999.

Attorney John A. Nechman will discuss legal issues including reproductive rights and estate planning, discrimination concerns such as workplace and public accommodation and relationship topics such as divorce, child custody, visitation and support. Dr. Hunter Hammill will speak about local HIV statistics and women’s health issues.

HDHHS convened the task force in 2002 to help increase education and awareness of HIV, AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases among Hispanics. The task force is comprised of health agencies and community-based organizations that administer HIV and AIDS prevention programs or medical treatment and various community organizations.
