Mission
The Houston Health Department (HHD) has a mission to work in partnership with the community to promote and protect the health and social well-being of Houstonians and the environment in which they live. The health department has a long history of positioning asthma control as a priority. Based on a Community Health Assessment facilitated by the HHD, specific asthma improvement objectives were featured in a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) that was adopted and is currently being implemented over a five-year period.

Children's Environmental Health Symposium by Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU)
We are thrilled to share the exciting news that our Asthma Program team at the Houston Health Department (HHD) recently had the honor of serving on the planning committee for the Children's Environmental Health Conference on May.8th and 9th. This prestigious event was organized in collaboration with the Texas Tech Health Science Center Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) team and took place at the Houston Marriott Hotel.
The conference was a tremendous success, bringing together a diverse range of expert speakers who addressed critical topics such as prenatal exposures, lead, asthma, wastewater, and industrial emissions. Each presentation provided invaluable insights into the various environmental factors that impact children's health, highlighting the importance of our collective efforts to create healthier environments for our youngest residents.
Attendees had the opportunity to engage with leading professionals in the field, exchange ideas, and gain a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding children's environmental health. The knowledge and strategies shared during the conference will undoubtedly enhance our ongoing efforts to protect and improve the health and well-being of children in our community.
We are incredibly proud of our team's contribution to this event and grateful for the collaboration with the Texas Tech Health Science Center PEHSU team. Together, we are making significant strides in addressing environmental health issues and ensuring a safer, healthier future for all children.

Asthma Self Management Education at K-12 Schools
We are delighted to announce a significant milestone for our Environmental Mobile Unit (EMU) program. By the end of this month, the EMU program will have successfully completed all lessons of the Asthma Self-Management education at enrolled Houston Independent School District (HISD) schools.
Throughout this academic year, our dedicated Asthma Program team has worked diligently to implement the American Lung Association's Open Airways Curriculum. This comprehensive program was delivered to a total of 12 schools, reaching approximately 130 children. Each participant has gained valuable knowledge and skills to better manage their asthma, promoting healthier and more active lives.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the HISD schools that participated in the program and to the children and families who engaged so enthusiastically in the lessons. Your involvement is key to the success of our initiatives, and together, we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of many.
HHD + UTHealth Asthma Program
In celebration of Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month this May, the HHD Asthma Program has partnered with UT Health doctors to conduct impactful community outreach at Memorial Hermann Hospital. This collaboration aims to raise awareness about asthma and allergies, providing valuable information and resources to the community.
Our joint goal is to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively manage asthma and allergies, reducing the incidence of asthma attacks and improving overall quality of life. By addressing common triggers, demonstrating proper medication usage, and promoting healthy living practices, we are helping to create a healthier, more informed community.

Home Visits
We are excited to announce the latest enhancement to the Environmental Mobile Unit (EMU) Program – a Home Visit Component, designed to extend our outreach and support for families directly within their living spaces. This new feature allows parents to opt-in for an in-depth home visit, which includes a comprehensive "Healthy Homes Inspection" and specialized asthma education tailored specifically for parents.

Healthy Homes Training
Our ongoing Healthy Homes Training Programs have been making a significant impact in the community, and we are excited to share the progress we have made. Conducted primarily at various multi-service centers, these training sessions have been attracting 20-30 participants each time, reflecting the growing interest and need for this valuable education.
The benefits of these training programs extend far beyond individual households. Healthier homes lead to healthier families, which in turn contribute to a healthier community. Participants gain the knowledge and tools needed to reduce the risk of asthma triggers, lead exposure, and other environmental hazards. This not only improves the quality of life for residents but also reduces healthcare costs and the burden on medical facilities.

Asthma Prevention and Control Program is a Houston Health Department (HHD) program. The department works in partnership with the community to promote and protect the health and social well-being of Houstonians and the environment in which they live. HHD is a full-service health department that not only performs all core functions of a Public Health Department but also many enhanced functions including initiatives to address health inequities. HHD services benefit all Houston residents but the department also takes additional steps to support those most in need, such as low-income mothers and children, the elderly, and minority populations. Most HHD functions serve the 2.3 million residents of the City of Houston but the scope and impact extend into Harris County’s population of 4.7 million people through the department’s Area Aging on Aging, Bureau of Youth and Adolescent Health, Project Saving Smiles, See to Succeed, immunization strategies, syndromic surveillance and HIV-STD surveillance. HHD’s laboratory also services a 17-county region. Learn more at
