Houston Health Department's Open House To Celebrate National Public Health Week Saturday April 9th

The Houston Health Department (HHD) and the Houston Health Foundation are hosting an open house at 11 multi–service centers throughout Houston to celebrate National Public Health Week. The event focuses on public health achievements, improving the general health of Houstonians by educating the public about various health issues and how they can live longer healthier lives. HHD will also highlight its community services available related to chronic disease prevention, environmental health, public health preparedness, human services and adolescent health.

Come and join the fun for the whole family from 10 am to 2 pm at the following locations:

  • Acres Homes MSC, 6719 West Montgomery
  • Northeast MSC, 9720 Spaulding
  • Denver Harbor MSC, 6402 Market Street
  • Southwest MSC, 6400 High Star
  • Fifth Ward MSC, 4014 Market Street
  • Sunnyside MSC, 4605 Wilmington Street
  • Hiram Clark MSC, 3810 West Fuqua
  • Third Ward MSC, 3611 Ennis Street
  • Kashmere MSC 4802 Lockwood;
  • West End MSC, 170 Heights Blvd
  • Magnolia MSC, 7037 Capitol Street.

The public is encouraged to come and enjoy fun and games along with healthy eating classes, cooking demos, and learn more about the HHD Community Gardens. There will be an opportunity for families to engage in health services such as, HIV testing at the Acres Homes, Southwest, Sunnyside, and Third Ward MSCs. WIC services will be available to provide nutritious foods and nutrition education to pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, women who have given birth in the last six months and children up to age 5 who have nutrition health-related problems. Single fathers, grandparents and foster parents are also eligible for WIC services for their children.

There will be immunization, dental, and TB education available for interested family members. Client Access connecting families to medical care and coverage as well as Service Linkage which connects families to community network services will be available. There will be Lead Base Paint, Pool and Water safety information available. The Harris County Area Agency on Aging will be on hand advocating awareness of the needs of the elderly through services that assist the elderly and their families with options that promote independence, well-being and dignity.

There will be classes, Information tables, community and business vendors, and moonwalks for the kids, and a host of other activities for the entire family to enjoy.
