We welcome your feedback at hhdcommunications@houstontx.gov The Houston Health Department (HHD) works in partnership with the community to promote and protect the health and social well-being of Houstonians and the environment in which they live. HHD is a full-service health department that not only performs all core functions of a Public Health Department but also many enhanced functions including initiatives to address health inequities. HHD services
benefit all Houston residents but the department also takes additional steps to support those most in need, such as low-income mothers and children, the elderly and minority populations. Most HHD functions serve the 2.3 million residents of the City of Houston but the scope and impact extends into Harris County’s population of 4.7 million people through the department’s Area Aging on Aging, Bureau of Youth and Adolescent Health, Project Saving Smiles, See to Succeed, immunization strategies, syndromic surveillance and HIV-STD surveillance. HHD’s laboratory also services a 17-county region.

  The Houston Health Department (HHD) has a mission to work in partnership with the community to promote and protect the health and social well-being of Houstonians and the environment in which they live. The health department has a long history of positioning asthma control as a priority. Based on a Community Health Assessment facilitated by the HHD, specific asthma improvement objectives were featured in a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) that was adopted and is currently being implemented over a five-year period. --> EMU Launch

This month marks an exciting milestone for us, as we launch our Environmental Mobile Unit (EMU) aimed at enhancing asthma awareness among children. Our primary focus is to deliver comprehensive Asthma Self-Management Education (ASME) to elementary students within the Houston Independent School District (HISD). We've successfully partnered with 14 strategically chosen schools located in areas heavily impacted by asthma, with the goal of engaging approximately 100 students in our ASME program.

In preparation for this initiative, the team has undergone rigorous training and are now certified by the American Lung Association in Asthma Education. This equips us to effectively administer the renowned Open Airways for Schools (OAS) curriculum, ensuring a high-quality educational experience for the students. This initiative represents our commitment to promoting better health and well-being in our community, starting with our youngest and most vulnerable members.

Dear valued members of our coalition,

We are reaching out to seek your assistance in identifying Asthma Support groups within the Houston area, especially those catering to children or parents of children with Asthma. Your knowledge and connections in the community are invaluable to us in this endeavor.

If you have any information about such groups, please do not hesitate to contact Edwin Paul at edwin.paul@houstontx.gov. Your input is crucial in helping us connect and support families dealing with Asthma in our community.

Thank you for your continued collaboration and support in this important matter.

Women Infant Children (WIC)
In our ongoing commitment to community health, we have embarked on an outreach program at local Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) centers, focusing on asthma awareness during pregnancy. Recognizing the unique challenges asthma poses for expectant mothers, our team offers resources to aid women with asthma during pregnancy. These efforts aim to empower pregnant women with the knowledge and tools needed to manage their asthma effectively, ensuring the health and safety of both mother and child. This initiative also includes collaboration with healthcare professionals at WIC centers, enhancing our ability to provide cohesive and informed support to the community.

--> Great American Smoke Out (GASO)

Our department took an active role in the Great American Smoke Out, emphasizing not only the hazards of smoking and tobacco use but also its impact on asthma. The event was a blend of educational talks, personal stories, and resource sharing, all aimed at promoting a smoke-free lifestyle for better respiratory health. Participants engaged in discussions about asthma and the benefits of quitting smoking, with a focus on improving overall health.

--> Coalition Development
  Over the past four weeks, the Houston Health Department has been actively engaged in fostering connections with various healthcare providers, universities, pharmaceutical companies, and key stakeholders. The objective is to build a coalition dedicated to addressing asthma-related issues and improving community awareness of available asthma resources. Notably, the department has been in communication with Zeba Bhanji, Head of the BREATHE Project at the University of Houston, among others, to strengthen this collaborative effort. Together, we aim to enhance the well-being of the Houston community by providing valuable asthma-related information and support. -->       Community Outreach Activities

 Here are some events from the past month:
  • Veterans Fest 23 at East Aldine Amphitheatre
  •  Aldine ISD Health Resource Fair
  • Posada with Port community resource fair at Galena Park
