HHD is a full-service health department that not only performs all core functions of a Public Health Department but also many enhanced functions including initiatives to address health inequities. HHD services
benefit all Houston residents but the department also takes additional steps to support those most in need, such as low-income mothers and children, the elderly and minority populations. Most HHD functions serve the 2.3 million residents of the City of Houston but the scope and impact extends into Harris County’s population of 4.7 million people through the department’s Area Agency on Aging, Bureau of Youth and Adolescent Health, Project Saving Smiles, See to Succeed, immunization strategies, syndromic surveillance and HIV-STD surveillance. HHD’s laboratory also services a 17-county region.

On Wednesday, the Harris County Area Agency on Aging (HCAAA) welcomed first-year McGovern Medical School students as part of the PLUS service-learning program.
Students received an overview of AAA services from Dr. Carmen Castro, Suzanne Terry, Beverly Brownlow, and Paula Johnson, followed by presentations from Adult Protective Services, Dr. Dona Murphey on dementia, and Dr. Janice Sparks on the CATCH Community Care Hub and the integration of healthcare and social care.
To close out the day, Dr. Theresa Tran, Houston Health Department Director, shared words of wisdom on public health’s role in healthy aging, the importance of connecting clinical care with community services, and the opportunities future physicians have to address social drivers of health.
A meaningful day of learning, connection, and preparing the next generation of physicians to support healthier communities.
