The Houston Health Department receives almost $500,000 in grant funding from the EPA for air quality studies in Houston communities
The Houston Health Department was awarded an EPA grant of close to $500,000 for air quality improvements in Houston’s most impacted communities. The grant monies will be used to implement community monitoring programs and devices as well as provide information on air quality testing to regulators and residents for transparency.

Houston Health Department reports syphilis outbreak, begins rapid community outreach response
The Houston Health Department is reporting a syphilis outbreak responsible for a 128 percent increase in cases among women and a nine-fold rise in congenital syphilis in Houston and Harris County.
The department will launch a rapid outreach response that includes increasing screening opportunities, targeting hotspots and mobilizing community partners to curb new infections.
Statistics from the department indicate new infections rose from 1,845 in 2019 to 2,905 in 2022, a 57 percent increase.

Cyclospora cases are on the rise in Harris County

The Houston Health Department (HHD) works in partnership with the community to promote and protect the health and social well-being of Houstonians and the environment in which they live. HHD is a full-service health department that not only performs all core functions of a Public Health Department but also many enhanced functions including initiatives to address health inequities. HHD services
benefit all Houston residents but the department also takes additional steps to support those most in need, such as low-income mothers and children, the elderly and minority populations. Most HHD functions serve the 2.3 million residents of the City of Houston but the scope and impact extends into Harris County’s population of 4.7 million people through the department’s Area Aging on Aging, Bureau of Youth and Adolescent Health, Project Saving Smiles, See to Succeed, immunization strategies, syndromic surveillance and HIV-STD surveillance. HHD’s laboratory also services a 17-county region.
