Vaccine team on the move
The Houston Health Department's (HHD) Office of Chronic Disease, Health Education and Wellness (OCDHEW) team and the Mobile Vaccination Unit (MVU) are moving to provide herd immunity in Houston.
A health fair was held in June, at PlazaAmericas Mall, where routine vaccines for adults and children were offered. COVID-19 bivalent, flu and Mpox vaccines were administered to people ages 18 and under and 65 and older. The team vaccinated over 25 people and was co-administered with several vaccines.
The Houston Area Urban League provided $25 gift cards for people receiving their COVID-19 vaccines and HHD provided $50 gift cards for bivalent doses and routine vaccines. MVU nurses also educated attendees about the vaccines they need to be current on.

Texas bears the highest cost of health inequities in the country
New research revealed in 2018 from the National Institute on Minority Health (NIMHD) shows that the economic burden of health disparities cost the US economy $451 billion, a 41% increase from the previous estimate of $320 billion in 2014. The highest burden of racial and ethnic health inequities were among the most populous and diverse states:
Texas ($41 billion), California ($40 billion), Illinois ($29 billion), Florida ($27 billion), and Georgia ($21 billion).
